So who uses vibrators? The rising visibility of vibrators in ordinary media and standard retail stores, begs the question - Do many individuals really use vibrators? Until recent times there wasn't much reliable investigation on vibrator use. In 2009, Michael Reece, Debra Herbenick and colleagues at Indiana University published two surveys on vibrator use: Prevalence and Characteristics of Vibrator Use by Men in the United States and Prevalence and Characteristics of Vibrator Use by Women in the United States, which proffer a much more trustworthy and exhaustive look at vibrator use. Here are their findings: In general, just under 50% of respondents had enjoyed a vibrator at some time in their lives. This is true of somewhat more women (52%) than guys (45%). When are vibrators used? Women use vibrators frequently during masturbation (46%) and least during intercourse (37%). On the other hand, men are generally likely to employ vibrators with a partner during sex play or foreplay (40%). Only 17% of men had used a vibrator for masturbation. Among the most frequent reasons for guys were: "for fun" (67%), "to help their partner attain orgasm (40%) and to reach orgasm themselves (7%). How do vibrators connect to sexual performance? Vibrator users and non-vibrator users were evaluated on quite a few measures of sexual performance. The questions related to erectile function, intercourse gratification, tenderness, orgasm, lubrication and sexual desire. Generally, both males and girls who use vibrators state fewer troubles with reference to sexual function. Those who had used a vibrator within the earlier month, responded in ways that indicated a smaller amount of problems with sexual function. Wholesome behavior and vibrator use? Both men and females who use vibrators were more prone to do things that point to a comfort with their bodies and an interest in taking care of themselves. Girls who use a vibrator are more likely, than those who had not, to have had a gynecologic exam in the previous year and done a genital self-exam in the past month. Males who reported performing testicular self-exams within the past month were much more prone to have used a vibrator than those who had not. Cleaning sex toys? The good news is that the preponderance of guys and women do cleanse their vibrators. The bad news is that some don’t. 20% of males and 14% of women reported never having cleansed their adult toys. Of those who do clean, behavior could still get better. 60% of women and 53% of men report cleaning their vibrator before and after use, with the balance either cleansing before or after. Does vibrator use have side-effects? This section of the report was limited to women only. - 71.5% never reported any side-effects. - 16% reported numbness - 3% reported pain - 10% reported irritation - 8% felt swelling - 1% reported tears or cuts In all cases, those who experienced negative side-effects judged them to be rather short-lived and slight in rigorousness.
